Almsgiving is one of those areas of focus during Lent. We have been talking as a staff about how our students see this important Catholic concept. We hope that the students' give out of generosity and charity rather than expecting a "return" on the investment in the form of a prize. In this month of February we started the Jump Rope for Heart program. If your child chooses to participate, I hope it is because they see the important work done by the American Heart Association to help stop the rate of heart related deaths. If you talk with them about that, it would be great!
They will also bring home a Heifer International "ark" that they can fill with coins or cash to support this organization which pays it forward to promote social justice in developing areas of the world. The kids will learn about this in-depth during their Lenten retreat, but you can take them online to www.heifer.org to learn together what it is all about. Here is a great video from TV personality, Alton Brown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=8&v=fDIedFMSN64
It is my hope that you can take time this Lent to allow your child to earn money toward supporting these organizations (if it fits into your charitable giving plan).
